Convenience store clerk shot, killed during attempted robbery

CUMBERLAND, Ind. (WISH) – A convenience store clerk was shot and killed during an attempted robbery in Cumberland Friday evening, according to Cumberland police.

Police were called to the store in the 11100 block of East Washington Street around 7 p.m.

A Cumberland police official told 24-Hour News 8 that two armed men demanded money from the gas station clerk.

Before the clerk could hand over money, one of the suspects jumped on the counter and shot the clerk.

The clerk, described as a man in his 20s, died of his injuries. He has not been identified.

The suspects fled and got way with no money, according to police.

They are described as two black men with hoodies. They were wearing masks and gloves at the time of the shooting.

Two other people inside the convenience store reportedly witnessed the shooting.

The convenience store reportedly new to the area, having just opened up in the last few months.

Police say the incident was caught on surveillance cameras.
