ISP, INDOT monitor roads with more than 100 cameras

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – INDOT gave 24-Hour News 8 an inside look into its traffic management center Tuesday morning.

Indiana State Police and INDOT workers monitor more than 100 cameras with views of Indiana’s interstates. Anytime the workers see a slide-off, wreck, or any type of incident they send a Hoosier Helper or ISP trooper to go assist the driver.

The cameras also allow INDOT to update its Traffic Wise system, which gives people a map of real-time traffic updates. INDOT also tweets traffic updates.

On Tuesday, temperatures were set to drop and more snow moved in, but INDOT said it didn’t bring in any extra workers to the management center. The usual workers said they were prepared to handle any incidents that may arise because of weather.
