Indiana scores top spot in charter school law ranking

INDIANAPOLIS (inside INdiana Business) – The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools has released its annual ranking of state charter school laws with Indiana ranked in the top spot for the fifth consecutive year. The report analyzed 45 charter schools by comparing and awarding points for each state’s special education capabilities, student enrollment procedures and extracurricular activities, among other areas.

Indiana scored 181 points out of 240. The Hoosier state scored high for including multiple authorizers and providing autonomy and accountability.

The report also found that Indiana has made a concentrated effort improve funding to charter schools.

An area the report found that Indiana could improve upon was boosting accountability for full-time virtual charter schools. It also showed that the state could benefit from more initiatives to close the “inequitable funding gap between charter school students and their counterparts in district public schools.”

According to the report, Indiana had 96 public charter schools in 2017-2018 with an estimated 38,800 students attending.
