Crash north of downtown causes traffic headache for nearly 5 hours

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A crash on I-65 north of downtown Indianapolis injured several people and closed the interstate for hours Thursday morning.

Indiana State Police say an SUV and semi collided just before 3:30 a.m. on southbound I-65 near 38th Street, flipping the SUV onto its roof and causing heavy front-end damage to the semi.

All lanes of southbound I-65 were closed until about 8:30 a.m. as crews cleaned up fuel. Nearly 55 gallons of the semi’s diesel fuel spilled across the interstate, according to police.

Good Samaritans drove several SUV occupants to the hospital, but police are having trouble locating those injured people. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Indiana State Police at 317-899-8583.

A third vehicle was also involved, according to police, but it’s unclear what role it played.Stay with WISHTV.com for updates.
