9th District Congressional race could come down to the wire
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The primarily republican held 9th District Congressional seat has a fair chance to be won this year by Democratic candidate Shelli Yoder.
The district spanning from the Ohio River to the southern suburbs of Indianapolis is now held by Republican Rep. Todd Young, who gave it up to run for the Senate.
A political newcomer won the Republican primary for the 9th Congressional District. Trey Hollingsworth moved to Indiana in September from Tennessee. His father spent at least $1.7 million of their own money on his campaign. Other Republicans accused Hollingsworth of trying to buy the congressional seat, but his television commercial-heavy campaign presented him as a political outsider.
Hollingsworth accuses Yoder of being a Liberal Democrat who will have the same values as Hillary Clinton, including support for higher taxes and support for public health care.
Hollingsworth has been endorsed by the US Chamber of Commerce and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.
Libertarian congressional candidate Russell Brooksbank entered the world of politics as a delegate to the Rebulican Convention but realized his views were better suited for the Libertarian party. In September, Brooksbank was arrested in Louisville on charges of assault of a police officer after an alleged struggle over his phone during a traffic stop.
The officer reported Brooksbank was stopped after making a rude gesture to a passing Kentucky State trooper. Brooksbank has maintained his innocence since the arrest.
