Pedestrian fatally struck by train in Fort Wayne

 FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Police are investigating the death of a person who was struck by a train Sunday afternoon.

Medics and police responded to the railroad tracks near the intersection of East Berry Street and Hanna Street around 2:50 p.m. Fort Wayne police put up crime scene tape for several blocks near the intersection. It is believed the train didn’t hit the person at the crossing.

According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, one person is dead and another person who was with the victim was treated by medics. That person remained at the scene to talk to police about what happened.

FWPD declined further comment stating the investigation was being handled by Norfolk Southern. Investigators from the railroad company had yet to make the scene by 4 p.m. but where believed to be en route from an area outside Fort Wayne.

No other information was immediately available.

Calls to Northern Southern on Sunday have not been returned.
