Man arrested with loaded AK-47, drugs in downtown Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man was taken into custody in downtown Indianapolis early Sunday morning with an AK-47, a handgun and drugs, according to metro police.
Dominick Smith, 23, was pulled over for traffic violations around 1:30 a.m. in the 300 block of South Meridian Street.
Inside his vehicle, police say they found a loaded AK-47. He was also carrying a 9 mm handgun, according to IMPD.
A mason jar of marijuana as well as a digital scale used to weigh drugs were also found in the vehicle.
Smith faces preliminary charges of possession of and dealing in marijuana.
IMPD said the arrest is an example of the department’s new beat system at work. The city is divided into four “entertainment zones” and 15 neighborhood beats so officers can target specific areas.
