High schooler gifts COVID-19 safety kits to seniors
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)– Lance Williams, a 16-year-old junior at Brebeuf Jesuit High School with a heart for senior citizens, made a special delivery to some of them one Wednesday evening.
Williams established Lance’s Gift in 2017 and since then, he’s raised more than $10,000 to buy Christmas gifts for the elderly. “My favorite moment, when we do Christmas gifts, is seeing the smiles on the senior citizens’ faces and their gratitude,” Williams said.
“My mission to help senior citizens is important because they are the most vulnerable people in our society. They have limited income and have to budget carefully to just be able to afford basic things.”
When the coronavirus pandemic hit he dedicated his mission to keep seniors safe during the health crisis and with the help of his mom Carolyn, he made his first safety kit drop off at Bishop T. Garrott Benjamin Jr. Senior Living Center.
“When a global pandemic happens that can affect their health it’s important for me and other people to step up and help,” he said. “Aging is part of life and I hope that someone will be thinking about me when I become a senior citizen.”
The kits come with:
- Two disposable face masks
- One reusable face mask
- Two pair of disposable gloves
- One 4 oz bottle of antibacterial hand sanitizer
- One no touch tool
Williams said the Bishop T. Garrott Benjamin Jr. Senior Living Center management team was excited to get the gifts for their residents and they distributed the kits between four different locations.
“We plan a second round of donations before Christmas,” he said.
