Columbus police, Animal Care Services rescue 9 ducks from storm drain

COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) – Police in Columbus and the Animal Care Services rescued nine ducklings that got trapped in a storm drain on Wednesday.

According to police, two people said they heard cries from several ducks around 1 p.m. The ducklings were stuck in a storm drain near 7th Street and Pleasant Grove.

Officers Chris Strickland and Chris McDaniel with Columbus Animal Care Services helped rescue the ducks and get them to safety.

Strickland was able to remove two ducks by hand and return them to the mother, but he had to wait for backup from McDaniel, who arrived a short time later with a net to get the rest of the ducks out safely.

Unfortunately they were unable to reunite the remaining ducks with their family.

McDaniel believes the ducks are about two weeks old and were in good health. The ducks were taken to UTOPIA Wildlife Rehabilitators in Hope, Indiana. The organization specialize in the rehabilitation and release of animals.
