IMPD officer hit by vehicle, suspect in custody

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis police officer was hit by a vehicle and another officer fired a shot on the east side of the city Saturday evening.

Police were called to a traffic accident around 6:45 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of 38th Street between Franklin Road and the I-465 overpass.

A Jeep Commander not involved approached the accident driving against traffic, he became impatient and started heading east in the westbound lanes, according to IMPD.

Officers then tried to stop the vehicle heading the wrong direction,by waving their arms.  When the vehicle did come to a stop, officers approaching the vehicle noticed smoke coming from the vehicle and soon detected the smell of marijuana.

Officers asked the driver of the Jeep, 27-year-old Aaron Carr to exit his vehicle.  He ignored the officer’s command and instead rolled up his window.

Carr then put the vehicle in reverse, spinning his tires on the wet pavement and struck an officer’s arm and torso with his vehicle.

The vehicle fled and a second officer fired a shot at it, IMPD said. IMPD said the bullet did not hit any vehicles or people.

The vehicle continued driving in reverse until he crashed into the median in the 7700 block of East 38th Street.

Police said it was at that time that Carr exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

Carr was quickly arrested by IMPD.  He faces preliminary charges for battery on an officer, criminal recklessness, resisting law enforcement and operating a vheicle while intoxicated.

The officer hit by the vehicle had a hand injury and a possible back injury.

No one else was injured.
