‘Gr8 Comeback’: Newk’s Eatery Greenwood feeds health care workers
GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) — Newk’s Eatery in Greenwood is still standing after another one of the chain’s Indianapolis locations shut down. Now the staff at the restaurant in Greenwood are hoping the community will help them do one thing.
“Just staying here,” General Manager Angel Johnson said. “Just staying open. Continuing in the community.”
Betty Fugate reached out to “Gr8 Comeback” reporter Randall Newsome, not only as the regional catering director for Newk’s, but also as someone concerned about her team.
Ever since the pandemic hit, they’ve felt the impact in a big way.
“We lost a lot of our catering,” Fugate said.
Instead of completely focusing on what they were losing, the restaurant decided to use their strength in catering to serve our frontline heroes.
“In my past life I was on the front line,” Johnson said. “I was an LPN, so I know what it’s like to be there 12, 13, 14 hours a day.”
So far they’ve delivered nearly 1,000 meals to workers at their neighboring hospitals and police and fire departments.
