Family of 5 loses everything in Indianapolis house fire
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Firefighters say a family of five lost everything in a house fire Monday evening on the far southeast side of Indianapolis.
IFD crews were called to the 5100 block of Cedar Mill Lane around 7:15 p.m.
The fire reportedly started in the garage and spread to the home. IFD said it caused more than $300,000 in damage.
A woman reportedly told firefighters her husband discarded fire place ashes into a trash can in the garage. A short while later she smelled burning wood but didn’t think anything of it.
Within an hour smoke began pouring from the garage into the home.
By the time the family realized what was happening, the home was engulfed in flames. All five people — two adults and three children ages 4, 12 and 10 — safely escaped.
Two dogs, named Jupiter and Venus, were found OK in a room heavily damaged by smoke and fire.
Two vehicles in the driveway were a total loss.
