Indy DPW, others prepare for potential heavy rain and flooding

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Department of Public Works is preparing for potential flooding and severe weather. 

They will have dispatch teams, barricade crews, forestry staff and traffic signal technicians on standby to respond to any weather-related issues.

DPW is asking everyone to reduce the potential flooding by proactively checking storm drains, inlets, driveway culverts and cross-pipes to remove yard debris and trash. It’s also important to avoid a roadway that is impassable due to high water or a downed tree limb. if you see a road like that, call the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622. Calls to the Mayor’s Action Center after normal business hours can be directed to DPW dispatch by selecting option 2.

Residents can also use RequestIndy online or through the mobile app to report concerns at any time. if you notice ongoing flooding on a public street, call Citizens Energy Group at 317-924-3311 and select option 2 to report standing water more than 48 hours after the wet weather event.

Hamilton County Emergency Management posted a few photos on Twitter. They’re preparing for heavy rain over the next several days.

The highway department is bringing in more sand and they’re making them available to county residents. Last week, sandbags were available in Noblesville after the concern over potential flash flooding. they can be picked up at 1717 Pleasant Street in Noblesville.

Just last week in southern Indiana, Bloomington was hit hard with flooding. Pictures from the Bloomington Fire Department showed cars stuck in the standing water and the staircase of a building starting to fill.
