2 injured, including child, in shooting on near-northwest side
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Two people were injured, including a child, in a Sunday afternoon shooting on the city’s near-northwest side.
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called around 5 p.m. Sunday to the 2600 block of North Harding Street on a report of a person shot.
They arrived to find a victim with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds and a child with injuries consistent with a graze wound, IMPD said by email.
Sunday evening, Indianapolis police got a call of a shooting at the intersection of Roach and Harding streets. When officers got here, they found a man around his 40s shot and lying in the street. Police say he was possibly riding a bicycle at the time.
An officer rushed to help him, and he was taken to the hospital. Police also tell News 8 that a boy inside a gold SUV on scene was grazed and taken to Riley Hospital for Children.
“All we have currently is that a vehicle drove by and fired shots. I don’t know if the victims here, I know the child was not the intended victim. Probably the guy on the bicycle was not the intended victim. Drove by, a family was here having a little event. We don’t know what the target is at this time. It’s still under investigation and aggravated assault is on the scene at this time,” Capt. Kimberly Young with IMPD told News 8.
Dynel Bailey lives nearby.
“It’s really sad, man, especially I just found out that it was a kid, too? That’s really sad, you know what I mean? I don’t want to see nobody get hurt, but a kid is just terrible.” Bailey explained.
This is the second weekend in a row with an Indianapolis shooting involving a child. Last weekend, five people were shot, including a 4-year-old girl and a 16-year-old girl outside of a funeral home on West 30th Street.
“It’s very difficult because we’re families and we have children as well. Usually when a child is involved in an incident like this, the family, communities, churches, everybody rallies together to try to help solve these incidents. So, we’re asking that at this time, that we will still get that same response,” Young said.
Police said this shooting appears to be isolated. As of right now, there isn’t suspect information.
“I’m hoping everybody gets a speedy recovery,” Bailey said.
Police told News 8 the child is stable at Riley Hospital. The man who was shot is also stable at a local hospital.
Police ask if you have any information about this shooting to call aggravated assault detectives at 317-327-3475 — or you can call 317-262-TIPS.
