Beech Grove police officer honored

BEECH GROVE, Ind. (WISH) – A new sign was installed in Beech Grove on Tuesday to honor a fallen police officer.

Fifteen years ago on Sept. 29, Officer William Toney was killed in the line of duty.

He was in pursuit of a stolen vehicle when the two suspects in the vehicle fled on foot. One of those suspects ended up ambushing Toney and killing him.

“I want them to remember that Beach Grove police were there for them and will continue to be there for them. I want them to remember that Bill Tony died protecting them,” said Cpt. bob Mercury with the Beech Grove Police Department.

Officer Toney would have turned 47 years old on Sept. 30.

His killer is currently on death row.
