Indy man sentenced to 30 years in gun store robbery, murder
NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WISH) – An Indianapolis man has been sentenced to 30 years for his role in a murder and gun store robbery, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
DeJuan Worthen was has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.
The department says that in Sept. 2014, DeJuan Worthen, Darryl Worthen and Darion Harris went from Indianapolis to North Vernon in order to check out the inventory of the Muscatatuck Outdoors Gun Shop.
After the trip, they returned to Indianapolis and made plans to travel back to North Vernon in order to rob the store, the department said.
The next day, during the robbery, the DOJ says Darryl Worthen shot and killed the store owner, Scott Maxie.
While Maxie was on the ground dying, the three men stole 45 firearms and returned to Indianapolis. Once in Indianapolis, the three men sold and distributed many of the stolen guns, keeping a number of the firearms for themselves.
“This type of senseless violence is something no family or community should have to face,” said Acting U.S. Attorney John Childress. “This sentence should send a loud and clear message that gun violence cannot and will not be tolerated in the Southern District of Indiana. Those committing such violent acts will be held accountable for their actions.”
In addition to DeJuan Worthen’s sentence, Harris was also received 30 years while Darryl Worthen was sentenced to 60 years.
