Woman dies in shooting at apartments on northwest side
UPDATE: The victim has been identified as Adriona Coleman, 26.
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A woman has died after police and a SWAT team were called reports of shots fired Tuesday afternoon at apartments on the northwest side.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was called shortly before 3:15 p.m. Tuesday to the 4800 block of Covered Bridge Road. That’s the Covered Bridge Apartments near Georgetown Road and West 71st Street on the city’s northwest side. Police quickly arrived but immediately left upon believed the scene to be unsafe, and called in a special weapons and tactics team.
About 10 minutes after police were called, an emergency medical crew was called to the same location.
The woman was found dead in a common area for an apartment building.
Police say something inside the common area forced them to back out for safety reasons, but IMPD couldn’t tell News 8 exactly what happened. For about three hours, negotiators worked to get anyone inside the building to come out. Police talked over a loudspeaker and let off flash bangs, but no one ended up being inside the building.
Homicide detectives were following very specific leads, and talking to the woman’s family. Police on Tuesday night were no longer looking for anyone at the complex, IMPD said.
Police have not shared any information about a suspect, but do not believe the shooting was a random act.
Anyone with information was asked to call Detective Erika Jones at the IMPD homicide office at 317-327-3475 or e-mail the detective at Erika.Jones@indy.gov.
Covered Bridge Apartments was the scene of a death investigation in 2020. Maurine Swann, 29, was found dead with gunshot wounds in the early morning hours of Feb. 29, 2020. That homicide remains unsolved.
