High-speed pursuit ends in Fort Wayne
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A high-speed police pursuit started in Columbia City and ended on a dead-end street in Fort Wayne early Tuesday morning.
Columbia City police were alerted to a possible drive-off at a gas station around 12:45 a.m. when someone apparently did not pay for fuel. A pursuit ensued and officers ended up following a red vehicle east on U.S. 30 toward Fort Wayne.
Allen County deputies and Fort Wayne police officers were notified of the incoming vehicle and eventually joined the pursuit. The driver of the car approached speeds of 95 mph on U.S. 30 before turning onto Coliseum Boulevard. Speeds in excess of 60 mph continued throughout the city’s north side.
The pursuit quickly traveled down Coliseum Boulevard before the driver drove through a portion of the IPFW campus, at which time IPFW police got involved in the chase. The pursuit continued east on Trier Road before heading north on Maplecrest Road. City police deployed several stop sticks. The driver eventually hit sticks at Maplecrest and Stellhorn roads. The pursuit then turned east on Saint Joe Center Road before the driver turned left onto Revere Place.
Around 1:10 a.m., the driver reached the cul-de-sac at the end of the road and the pursuit ended.
The driver was taken into police custody without incident. His name was not released by Columbia City police. It’s unclear what charges, if any, the driver might face.
A Fort Wayne police officer inadvertently drove over stop sticks at one point in the pursuit, deflating at least two tires. An IPFW police car was also damaged when the suspect’s vehicle hit the cruiser.
No one was injured.
In all, the pursuit lasted roughly 25 minutes and spanned approximately 30 miles.
