IndyGo Red Line to open Labor Day weekend

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Drivers can expect the rapid transit Red Line to officially open Labor Day weekend.

But not before more construction starts Monday.

IndyGo officials announced plans for the summer.

Construction on College Avenue will ramp up this week as crews begin setting up station structures.

Officials said this construction will last through the end of the month.

There is some light at the end of the road. A spokesperson with IndyGo said all road work will finish at the end of July.

August work will include installation of real-time bus signage, training and testing of the system.

IndyGo officials said they also plan to launch major changes to existing routes and timetables when the Red Line does open.

The 13-mile Red Line route will run from Broad Ripple through downtown Indianapolis to the University of Indianapolis. And it will connect 50,000 residents, according to IndyGo.

The Red Line will also operate 20 hours a day, 7 days a week, with buses arriving every 10 minutes.

Construction will end with some good news.

News 8 learned when the Red Line does open, it will run free of charge for the first few weeks.
