EB I-70 reopens after fatal semi crash near Knightstown

LATEST: The Henry County Coroner’s Office by Dec. 27, 2022, has not responded to an email request from News 8 to identify the person who died.

LATEST: Indiana Department of Transportation tweeted at 3:47 p.m. Tuesday that three crashes earlier in the day on I-70 eastbound and westbound have been cleared. Hancock County reported heavy traffic on side roads including State Road 9 and U.S. 40, and encouraged people use GPS devices to avoid backups.

KNIGHTSTOWN, Ind. (WISH) — All lanes of eastbound I-70 near Knightstown are closed Tuesday morning due to a fatal crash involving two semitrucks, according to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.

Just after 4 a.m., a westbound semitruck crossed the median for unknown reasons near mile marker 116 and drove into the eastbound lanes, hitting an eastbound semitruck, Henry County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Jay Davis tells News 8.

The driver of the westbound truck died at the scene, according to Davis. The driver of the eastbound truck was taken to a hospital in Richmond.

As of 1:30 p.m., all lanes of the interstate between State Road 9 and Grant City Road remained closed.

The entrance ramp from State Road 109 to eastbound I-70 is also closed.

Eastbound interstate traffic is being diverted at State Road 9.

Secondary crash on EB I-70 closes ramp to Post Road

A secondary crash has closed the entrance ramp from Post Road to eastbound I-70.

The crash initially forced police to close all lanes of the interstate between Post Road and Fortville Pike.

Drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes, if possible.

INDOT did not say when it expects the interstate to reopen.
