New I-65 construction project will bring closures

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Work begins on a major construction project on I-65 that will last through the summer. It will also leave parts of I-65 closed on weekends for weeks.

The project will take place in phases. The purpose is to fix bridge work and patching.

It will affect northbound lanes from I-465 to the south split. All lanes will be closed until 6 a.m. Monday morning. Two northbound lanes at Southport Road to I-465 will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday night to 6 a.m. Monday morning.

If you’re heading north, you can get off I-65 at Southport Road, that ramp will remain open. You can’t get on I-65 going north from Southport Road.

INDOT suggests you take I-465 west to I-70 east to downtown or take I-465 west up to I-65 north to get around this.

“The past couple winters we’ve had some interesting freeze/thaw cycles so a lot of potholes have formed,” INDOT spokesperson Mallory Duncan said. “We’ve been out there every winter kind of filling in these emergency potholes and it was time to do these major projects to get our interstates back where they need to be.”

INDOT says the project is expected to be finished in June.
