Weather service confirms tornado in Montgomery County

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has confirmed a tornado hit about noon Wednesday near New Ross in eastern Montgomery County.

The tornado had maximum winds of 65 mph. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, the tornado was ranked an EF-0. The tornado touched down at 11:58 p.m. Wednesday in a rural area south of the intersection of U.S. 136 and County Road 1050 East, which is about a quarter-mile southeast of the town of New Ross. The tornado crossed U.S. 136 and lifted about a quarter-mile to the east. No injuries were reported. The tornado damaged a house, an outbuilding, and two garages. A grill was thrown about 20 yards.

The tornado was part of a line of severe thunderstorms that moved across the Hoosier state.

The weather service reports storms also blew over two semitractor-trailers on I-65 about 3 miles northwest of the Whitestown exit for State Road 267.

Storm Track 8 tweeted at 3:56 p.m. Eastern that no more tornado watches were within the main WISH-TV viewing area. Rain was set to move out of central Indiana between 6-7 p.m.

At 1:27 p.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Geneva, or 8 miles southwest of Berne, moving east at 50 mph.

The storm will be around Geneva at 1:35 p.m. and Berne around 1:40 p.m.

Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.

The tornado warning for northeastern Blackford and south central Wells Counties will expire at 1:30 p.m. because the storm that prompted the warning has moved out of the area.

At 1:21 p.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Pennville, or 12 miles northeast of Hartford City, moving east at 50 mph.

This storm will be near Geneva at 1:35 p.m. and Berne around 1:40 p.m.

This dangerous storm will be near Jamestown and Advance around 12:05 p.m.
