Tell City police officer, suspect killed in shootout at Perry County hospital

TELL CITY, Ind. (WISH) — A southern Indiana police officer and a suspect died Monday in a shootout at Perry County Memorial Hospital in Tell City.

Sgt. Heather Glenn, a veteran member of the Tell City Police Department, was fatally shot in a struggle with 34-year-old Sean Hubert just before 1 a.m. local time, Indiana State Police said in a release.

After Glenn was shot, officers with the Tell City and Cannelton police departments returned fire and shot Hubert.

Glenn and Hubert were treated at the scene and died of their injuries, state police say.

Glenn first began investigating Hubert on Sunday, when a woman told police she was involved in a domestic incident with him.

The woman was taken to Perry County Memorial Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries and was interviewed by Sgt. Glenn.

Glenn and other Tell City officers left the hospital to look for Hubert.

Just before 1 a.m. local time, the injured woman told police that Hubert was on his way to the hospital.

Police returned to the hospital and confronted Hubert. Glenn tried to arrest Hubert, but he refused to comply.

“Sgt. Glenn attempted to deploy an electronic-controlled weapon but it was ineffective. During a brief struggle, Hubert produced a firearm, and Sgt. Glenn was shot,” state police said in a release.

Police fired at Hubert, hitting and killing him.

The hospital’s emergency room remained open, but all other services were closed.

State police say Sgt. Glenn worked for the Perry County Sheriff’s Office and Tell City Police Department for nearly 20 years.

“Our police department suffered a tremendous loss. We are extremely heartbroken. We’re confident that with the support of our community…we will get through this,” Tell City Police Chief Derrick Lawalin said in a press conference.

Lawalin also praised the courage of Sgt. Glenn and other officers.

“I’d like to recognize the courage displayed by all officers involved in this incident. I also recognize that we’ve lost a citizen in this incident as well, so our thoughts and prayers are not only with our sergeant but the other individual involved and his family.”

Tell City police honored Sgt. Glenn with a vigil at the town’s city hall Monday night. Her police vehicle was also parked at the city hall for those who wished to leave flowers, gifts, or pay their respects.
