INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — One person died after an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer was involved in a Thursday morning shooting on the city’s northeast side.

At 9:40 a.m., an IMPD officer conducted a traffic stop in the 3400 block of North Parker Avenue for a car driving recklessly.

As the officer spoke to the driver, the driver fled on foot while holding a gun. The officer ran after the driver and fired his weapon, striking the driver at least once.

The injured driver was given medical aid and was taken to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Investigators located a firearm near the suspect when they were shot. The firearm was not an IMPD-issued weapon.

No officers or uninvolved citizens were injured and there is no ongoing threat to the community, IMPD Deputy Chief Michael Wolley said in a Thursday afternoon press conference. Detectives found narcotics on the scene.

The officer that was involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.

Walter Borns lives close to where the police shooting happened.

He says he saw a man’s body lying on the street near the officers.

“I just felt for his family because I pretty much knew something bad happened that’s the only reason me and a couple of neighbors went out there because of that,” Borns said. “I heard like five or six shots, so then I immediately noticed that I heard a siren after the shots, so I got up and went to go investigate and that’s when I see the suspect down.”

“I think it’s important that we recognize that someone lost his life here today. A family has been forever changed, a community has been forever changed, and our officer whose life has also been forever changed,” IMPD Chief Michael Wolley said.

Police say the investigation is ongoing

“We owe it to our community, we owe it to the family of the person who lost his life today and we owe it to our officer to complete and thorough investigation and ensure that we are transparent throughout that process,” Wolley said.
