Randy Ollis learns to make a paper airplane for National Paper Airplane Day
Happy National Paper Airplane Day! Today we’re celebrating by having Randy Ollis to learn to make a paper airplane. He took a live class from Rick Crosslin, district Scientist in Residence for MSD Wayne Township. Watch the video to see how it turned out.
Scientist Rick’s Paper Airplane Tips:
- Anyone can be an aviator – when you build a model, fly it, trim it, and fly again
- The classic Dart – goes fast and far – not a lot of flying
- No secrete paper – regular paper will work
- Folds, balance, and precision are important
- Trim it to fly the way you want it to go (positive dihedral wing angle & back up elevators)
- Science – the center of gravity vs the center of lift
- Select Distance or Time model (Takuo Toda holds the world record for the longest time in the air (27.9 seconds). The distance record (226 feet, 10 inches or 69.14 meters) was set by Joe Ayoob, with a plane constructed by John Collins, in February 2012.)
- Have fun, be creative
