Subway employee shot dead during possible robbery on northeast side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A sandwich shop employee was shot and killed Monday night after a fight inside the business on the city’s northeast side, police said.

Medics and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to a robbery in progress at a business shortly after 7:45 p.m. at Subway, 7401 N. Shadeland Ave. That’s in the Shadeland Station Shopping Center south of 75th Street.

Sgt. Grace Sibley, an IMPD spokesperson, said, three people had entered the sandwich shop in an apparent robbery attempt. All three were dressed in black and carried black backpacks. Two of them wore black masks and the other wore a mask with a leopard print. At least one of the three was armed. It was not immediately clear how the three people left the shop.

Police were not immediately certain whether anything was taken during the robbery attempt. A fight broke out inside the restaurant before the shooting, police believe.

Police would not say if anyone else was in the restaurant, which was open, during the shooting.

The employee was a man, but additional information was not immediately available from police.

Police were working to get surveillance video from the shop.
