200 kids get to be a ‘firefighter for a day’

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Kids geared up to be firefighter fit Tuesday at the Warren Township Government Center.

The kids learned everything from how to be a fireman to how to make a 911 call.

It was part of a day camp put on by the Indianapolis Fire Department.

The camp featured backyard games designed to get kids moving as well as real life situations to teach the kids what to do if a fire breaks out.

The youngsters toured an ambulance, worked a fire hose and got to try a rescue scenario.

The event started out as a day camp to give the kids of firefighters a taste of what their parents do.

The community took interest and now around 200 grade school kids come each year.

The kids also got to take home an escape plan to share with their families to keep them safe if a fire ever breaks out at their home.
