72-year-old on motorized scooter struck, killed in hit-and-run

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A 72-year-old man is dead after a hit-and-run crash.

It happened just after 7:40 Wednesday night near the intersection of West Morris and South Tremont streets. That’s in the 2500 block of West Morris on the city’s west side.

The victim has been identified as Roger Roska.

A spokesperson for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the man was on some type of motorized scooter when he was hit. The impact of the crash pushed him out of the scooter and onto the ground.

“Officers immediately began administering chest compressions until EMS (emergency medical services) personnel arrived,” IMPD said in a news release. “EMS transported the victim to Eskenazi hospital in extremely critical condition. Despite the best life-saving efforts by medical staff, the victim succumbed to his injuries.”

The scooter also was damaged, police said.

There was no suspect or vehicle description. Detectives were canvassing the area looking for anyone who may have seen or heard what happened. They were also looking for homes or businesses nearby that have surveillance video in hopes of identifying a suspect.

“At the end of the day, whoever hit him knew they hit him. That is a fact. They knew they hit someone and they knew they intentionally fled the scene after striking another person,” said Capt. Harold Turner with IMPD.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.

Morris Street was closed from the 2400 to 2800 blocks as police investigated.
