A look inside downtown’s new transit center

IndyGo and the city of Indianapolis will distribute face coverings at the Carson Transit Center

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – If you’re an IndyGo rider, your bus route is about to change.

A $26.5 million dollar transit center will open Sunday, impacting bus routes across the city.

The Julia M. Carson Transit Center offers 19 covered bus bays with real-time bus information, a heated or air-conditioned waiting room, message boards, ticket sales and free WiFi.

IndyGo is sending volunteers to bus stops to let people know about the changes. Lifelong bus riders, including Estella Perkins, are giving out pamphlets and maps detailing the changes.

“You won’t have this big line of buses because all the buses will have their individual docking stations,” Perkins said to a rider at an Ohio Street stop downtown.

One question drivers are asking: will buses still travel in a loop of downtown?

They won’t travel the full loop, but all buses will stop at the transit center for connections.

IndyGo rider Angela Holtsclaw said the changes are worth it.

“As long as I know what bus I’m getting on, I’m cool,” she said. “It’s got bays for where your bus is going. You’re not going to miss it.”

Organizers will hold a ribbon cutting at the center Tuesday. IndyGo is offering free rides between June 26 and July 4.
