Indiana Historical Society celebrates businesswoman Madam C.J. Walker
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana Historical Society is putting Madam C.J. Walker in the spotlight.
She was a native Hoosier who built a beauty empire in a tough time to become a successful businesswoman. The exhibit on Walker details her life from being born on a plantation and her job cleaning clothes as a teenager to the rise of her empire.
The society’s exhibit has pictures and videos about her life, and visitors can step back into 1915. The museum has actors in a room decorated just like it would have been over 100 years ago where visitors can discuss the time period and get questions answered about Walker.
Pieces of Walker’s legacy remain in Indianapolis. The Madam Walker Legacy Center, a former theater, is named for her.
