Annual pop tab fundraiser could break world record

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – People have a chance to be a part of a Guinness World Record on Friday.

The Ronald McDonald house Charities of Central Indiana is hosting their annual Pop Tab and coin drop fundraiser Friday on Monument Circle.

All you have to do to be counted in the record is show up with some of the pop tabs.

It’s the 12th annual pop tab and coin drop and the charity group says they are looking to collect more than $11 million pop tabs today.

There will be Guinness Book of World Records auditors at the fundraiser to see if a record is broken. They’ll also be recording the collection process to make sure.

As for the charity portion, there is more aluminum in the tab of a pop can than the actual can itself, making it very valuable.

It’s also easier to collect and more sanitary than collecting cans. 24-Hour News 8 spoke to the CEO of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana about the fundraiser.

“The highest concentration of aluminum is in that pop tab. They are easier to collect, they are easier to store and through our partnership with Omin source we recycle those and the check comes back here to the Ronald McDonald house to support the families we support here 365 nights a year,” said CEO Michelle Study-Campbell.

According to investor.com currently one kilogram of aluminum is worth about $1,677.25, but that’s a lot of pop tabs.

The charity should make about $50,000 through the fundraiser Friday.

The event runs from 11 a.m. until about 2 p.m.

There will be a bunch of activities including a band and food trucks. Officials say they will be putting Pokemon Lures to bring more people downtown. The charity will have a drive through set up so people can just drop off the pop tabs.
