Artist rendering gives hope to identifying 1992 murder victim

THORNTOWN, Ind. (WISH) — Police call her Jane Doe.

Her remains haven’t been claimed, her identity is unknown. What authorities do know is that someone killed the woman in 1992, then put her body in a ditch just off Interstate 65 in Boone County near State Road 47.

Police investigating the woman’s death had little to go on. The woman had a tattoo on her right arm that read, “mom.” As days turned into months, there were no major leads in the case.

The woman, still unidentified, was buried, but her body was later exhumed. Detectives made a clay model of the victim.

Then at the end of 2018, a forensic artist created renderings of what the victim would have looked like.

“This case has haunted this office for over two decades. We desperately want to solve this horrible crime. We will continue to do everything in our power to bring resolve to this case. We owe it to Jane Doe and her family. We will never forget Jane Doe. I want to specifically thank the University of Indianapolis and Dr. Krista Latham for forensically analyzing all of Jane Doe in the recent years. I also want to thank our investigations division, our CSI division and the coroner’s office for their dedicated work in continuing to try and solve this crime,” said Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen.

The Boone County Sheriff Office is still taking tips about this case.
