Leaving behind the Hoosier State for the first time on Avi8or Adventures, we venture into the Land of Lincoln, arriving in Watseka, Illinois. Here, amid the tranquility of small-town America, folks awaited a remarkable spectacle steeped in history—the passage of the ‘Big Boy,’ the world’s largest operating steam locomotive.

This massive iron marvel, known as Big Boy No. 4014, thundered through Iroquois County as part of its grand 2024 tour across the United States. Before it even came into view, its towering smokestack sent plumes over the treetops, heralding its arrival. For 30 exhilarating minutes, the town paused to marvel as Big Boy stopped for servicing. Residents and visitors alike gathered to get a closer look at this icon of American railroading, capturing the moment with photos and shared awe.

Built in the 1940s and weighing over 1.2 million pounds, Big Boy’s sheer size and power remain unmatched. Originally designed to haul immense freight loads over the mountains, it has been restored to its former glory, captivating all who witness it.

As the servicing concluded, the crowd watched in awe as the giant locomotive resumed its journey. With a clacking of wheels and a thunderous whistle, Big Boy steamed onwards, continuing its Heartland of America tour towards Houston, before ultimately returning to Cheyenne, Wyoming, to conclude its tour. A tour that took more than 2 months to complete.

Witnessing the majestic Big Boy in action reminds us of the power and legacy of America’s rail history. It’s moments like these that truly highlight the wonder of our nation’s past and present.
