Carroll Co. man sentenced for pit bull attack
TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – A Carroll County man who pleaded guilty to eight counts of dog bite liability is sentenced Monday.
Richard Darter, 51, is sentenced to eight years in prison – one year for each count of dog bite liability. He was also ordered to pay restitution.
The charges stem from an attack in October 2015 when two women, 20-year-old Rebekah Forgey and 19-year-old Isabella George, were attacked by four pit bulls while walking down County Road 225 East near Cutler. The attack left one of the women seriously injured and sent the other woman and Darter to the hospital. The four dogs were euthanized following the attack.
As News 18 previously reported, Darter was arrested in Howard County on an arrest warrant for not appearing to his sentencing in April. In January, Darter pleaded guilty to eight counts of dog bite liability resulting in serious bodily injury.
Monday in court, both victims gave their statements about the attack. The sentencing lasted a little more than hour where additional evidence was presented to a judge.
Before the sentencing began, Darter submitted a plea agreement and agreed to the restitution.
