Coats, Pence mentioned as possible Trump running mate

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Donald Trump needs to pick a running mate and both Mike Pence and Dan Coats are being mentioned as a possibility, according to a published report.

Trump wants a politician with Washington experience and both Pence and Coats meet that requirement. Plus, Indiana has been good to Trump..

Politico.com quotes Washington insiders who think Tennessee Senator Bob Corker would be a good running mate choice, but Dan Coats is the second name mentioned.

It quotes a longtime friend of the Indiana Senator saying, “Everyone loves him. He’s a governing choice. Clean as a whistle.”

In a 24-Hour News 8 interview last year, however, Coats made it clear that he’s not a Trump fan.

“I don’t think the country wants someone with his bombast to be making decisions late in the night about the future of the country,” he said.

And that brings us to Pence who is one of just two other names mentioned. He first endorsed Ted Cruz for President but has already pledged his support for Trump.

“I think Donald Trump will do very well in the Hoosier state,” said Pence last week. “I look forward to campaigning with him in the days ahead.”

“A source said Pence… has received vetting overtures from Trump Tower,” according to Politico.

And before the Cruz endorsement, Trump told Indiana rallies that Pence is doing a good job.

In an interview the day before the Indiana primary, when asked if Pence is still doing a good job, Trump said, “I think he is, he’s a good guy.”

But a campaign spokesman for Pence said there has been no contact from the Trump campaign, and when asked about Vice President, Pence recently told a reporter in Terre Haute, “I have no interest in that.”

A spokesman for Dan Coats issued a statement that mocked Trump:

Coats has yuuuge plans for 2017, spending the summer at Wrigley Field cheering on the Cubs.”

That should put an end to the speculation.
