Convicted murderer escapes Ohio prison

NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WCMH) – A convicted murderer is missing from a prison in Nelsonville, and officials believe he may have escaped.

John Modie, convicted of murder, kidnapping and escape out of Cuyahoga County was in prison at the Hocking Unit of the Southeastern Correctional Complex in Nelsonville.

According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Modie was missing from the facility during the 11 p.m. count.

Prison officials are now searching the facility for Modie and working with local police to search for him outside.

Modie is serving a 15-year to life sentence for murder, robbery and escape. He was originally convicted in Cuyahoga County.

According to the facility’s website, the Hocking Unit houses approximately 450 older offenders. It is a minimum and medium security facility.
