Videos, photos show crowded Indianapolis Speedrome, few wearing masks

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Video and photos shared with News 8 on Saturday night show a packed house at the Indianapolis Speedrome.

News 8 received multiple reports on Saturday night from from people at the track, where multiple races were scheduled to run. Some attendees said the venue was sold out of tickets and was selling “standing room only” tickets. Others said the venue appeared packed beyond the capacity ordered July 23 by the Marion County Public Health Department and the Indianapolis mayor’s office. That order said sports venues were restricted to 25% capacity unless a plan is approved by the county health department.

Videos and photos obtained by News 8 also showed many people in the crowd not wearing masks.

A woman who was at the track and shared these photos, said via Facebook, “This is insane. There are pics everywhere at [S]peedrome saying social distance. And NO one is. There was only supposed to be a 25 percent capacity. As a patron and Hoosier, [I] feel very unsafe.”

News 8 reached out to the Speedrome, Mayor Joe Hogsett’s office, the Marion County Public Health Department, Gov. Eric Holcomb’s office and the Indiana State Department of Health and on Saturday night had not received any response.
