16-year-old girl struck by stray bullet on city’s east side dies
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 16-year-old girl has died after being struck by a stray bullet on the city’s east side early Sunday morning, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office on Sunday night identified the girl as Nya Cope. No cause or manner of death was immediately provided.
Police say officers were called to the area of 6000 East 38th Street just after 1 a.m. Sunday on reports of a person shot. That’s near the intersection of East 38th Street and North Arlington Avenue.
When they arrived to the scene they learned a 16-year-old girl who was traveling in a vehicle with her family was struck by a stray bullet.
The girl was taken to Sidney & Louis Eskenazi Hospital where she later died from her injuries.
Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS.
Authorities say a second person walked into Methodist Hospital in serious condition shortly after the girl’s shooting. Police say the shootings are not related.
