How gun violence in Indianapolis compares to the other US cities

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

This image from the National Gun Archive breaks down the number of gun deaths in 2020 with red dots.

There is a smaller cluster of red around Indianapolis, as compared to cities like Chicago, but given its size – how does gun violence in the Circle City compare to cities across the US?

Nationally last year, data from the National Gun Archive shows there were 15,336 deaths from gun violence. So far this year, there have been 1,883 deaths.

Data from Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) published by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) shows violent crime in the Midwest down by 4.4% from 2018 – 2019.

But the organization Everytown for Gun Safety paints a different picture for Indianapolis. The nonprofit, which advocates against gun violence, shows Indiana has the 19th highest rate of gun deaths in the US, with 35% of those deaths being homicides.

The organization also shows the rate of gun deaths in the state increasing by 35% in the last 10 years (2008 – 2017), compared to 17% nationwide.

On the heels of the recent quadruple homicide followed by this weekend’s string of violence, this adds to a bad stretch for the city.

Just yesterday, community leaders on the east side were trying to teach people how to deal with grief due to gun violence.

It marked the second meeting held by the Far East Side Community Council.
