Body found in vehicle on fire deemed a homicide

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An investigation is underway after a body was found in a car on fire, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, IMPD officers and crews from the Indianapolis Fire Department were called to the 7500 block of Woodlawn Avenue.

After getting to the scene, the deceased body of an adult male was found in the trunk of the vehicle. The man was later identified as Ail Smith Jr., 47.

Police said the flames were quickly extinguished as it was a small fire in the glove compartment.

The county coroner determined that Smith died of a gunshot wound.
