INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man has been convicted for the murders of a man and woman in August of 2019.

Dwayne Lucas was convicted of two counts of murder for the Aug. 5, 2019 slayings of Shainita Caffey and Miles Cross.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to the intersection of North Tibbs Avenue and Lafayette Road around 3 p.m. after witnesses saw a man, later identified as Lucas, approach an SUV occupied by Caffey and Cross.

Cross was shot from behind and Caffey fled the vehicle, authorities said. Caffey was on the phone with a utility company at the time of the shooting. Authorities said she was heard screaming “Oh my God! I have a daughter! I have a daughter” between gunshots during the call.

Both Cross and Caffey were transported to a nearby hospital where they later died from their injuries.

Lucas and another man, Terrell Redd, were arrested in October 2019 in connection to the shootings.

Lucas was charged with two counts of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious felon.

Redd was charged with assisting a criminal who committed a murder. According to online court records, a jury trial for Redd is scheduled for September.

A sentencing hearing for Lucas is scheduled for Aug. 6.
