Dogs of family injured in I-70 wreck being cared for by volunteers
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A family moving from Arizona to Ohio was involved in a fiery wreck on I-70 in Indianapolis Sunday morning.
All their belongings were destroyed and the three family members ended up in a hospital.
Two of their dogs didn’t survive, but the community has rallied to help the other two canines.
A massive search took place throughout the day Sunday to find the two missing dogs. Volunteers eventually located both and Monday volunteers took them for a vet checkup.
While their owners are being cared for in the human hospital, dogs Shaggy and Weevie are getting checked out at Brookville Road Animal Hospital.
“We wanted to make sure there wasn’t anything broken or any other injuries that we hadn’t noticed,” said Moe Tibbetts, president of Tails and Trails Rescue.
Little chihuahua Weevie didn’t want to let go of his temporary guardian, volunteer Diane Richards. The search party found him in a grassy area along the interstate near the crash site.
Aside from soreness, the doctor gave him a clean bill of health.
His brother Shaggy was found five miles from the crash site, walking along I-465.
He also got a clean bill of health, to the amazement of his guardians.
“It’s great news,” Richards said.
Both dogs are being taken care of by the organization Tails and Trails Rescue in Greenwood.
Their vet bills were kindly taken care of by donations, making that one thing the family won’t have to worry about while they recover.
“The best thing about it is their owners can get healthy themselves and know that the dogs are being cared for right now, and they don’t have to have that worry on top of everything else since they did lose everything,” Richards said.
Tibbetts heard from the family and has a message to pass along.
“They were very grateful and I guess overwhelmed at the response here in Indianapolis, not only for the animals, but for the family,” she said.
Both women said this is a reminder to microchip your animals.
Because both dogs had chips linking them to their owners, the reunion will be easy.
There’s also a donation website set up for the family.
