Dozens arrested on drug-dealing charges in Johnson, Marion counties

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — Dozens of people are facing charges related to dealing drugs in Johnson and Marion counties.

The Johnson County sheriff’s and prosecutor’s offices announced the arrests on Thursday afternoon.

Operation: Weakest Link 2019 has resulted in charges for 50 people. The focus of the operation was drugs, but more specifically the source of those drugs.

“The residual effect of a dealer is much stronger than someone who is an addict. We recognize there are addicts and we want to to try and get help for people who really need it,” said Joe Villanueva with the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office. “I don’t want to do that for dealers. You pedal the poison in our county, we put you in jail.”

The arrests primarily consisted of residents of Franklin, Indianapolis and Greenwood. The suspects range in age from 20 to 62 years old. 

Multiple local police departments, as well as US Marshals, assisted in making the arrests.

Police also recovered guns from many of the suspected dealers’ homes.

“Any time you one gun off the street whether it is 1, 2, 5, it doesn’t matter. You got drugs and guns together bad things are going to happen,” said Franklin Police Chief Kirby Cochran.

Thursday’s raids come about six months after the largest drug roundup in Johnson County history. 120 drug warrants were issued in November 2018. Of those, 117 have been caught.

One of the houses in Franklin police said they raided in November was raided again during this operation. This time they were able to arrest 9 of the 14 people that were inside on drug-related charges.

Mary Krover and her husband live down the street from that house and were home at the time of the raid.

“I am very glad the police is working on getting them off the street. It needs to happen I think because there is a lot of kids in this neighborhood and I worry about them all the time,” said Franklin resident Mary Krover.

Authorities are still looking for 23 other people on outstanding warrants.
