Emotional day in Delaware County after sheriff dies unexpectedly
MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) — It was a heartbreaking day in Delaware County after news broke that Sheriff Mike Scroggins died. Sheriff Scroggins died unexpectedly after surgery.
Chief Deputy Jason Walker is now filling in until a new sheriff is appointed. He refers to Scroggins as a friend. He’ll miss his leadership the most.
“Being able to run things by him and getting an honest answer,” said Walker.
The two developed a friendship that lasted more than 30 years.
“From little trips we’d take to schools we’d go to. The laughter. Just all the fun things,” remembered Walker.
One thing Walker remembers fondly is an event where they dressed up in women’s clothing to support the local YWCA.
“The red shoe, high heel event,” Walker added, “We had fun. He was just a really good guy. Really good guy.”
Walker said his boss went on sick leave three weeks ago for a serious shoulder surgery. According to Walker, he had surgery in Ohio where his girlfriend lives so that she could help take care of him.
“He was on the mend. Just talked to him the day before yesterday. He was talking about how he was getting along well and everything was going to be fine,” said Walker.
Days after his surgery, Sheriff Scroggins died unexpectedly.
“The doctor at the hospital said it was either a blood clot or a heart attack. They won’t know until they do an autopsy,” said Walker.
One thing he does know is Sheriff Scroggins’ death is a loss the entire community feels.
“I just want Sheriff Scroggins’ family and loved ones to know, he’ll be missed and he’ll be honored and we appreciate his service and always his call to duty,” said Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler.
A sentiment Walker echoes.
“It’s a very sad day. The department is grieving and I’m sure the community is grieving. Mike was well liked at the department and the community,” said Walker.
Sheriff Scroggins was in his second term. He served on the department for 29 years. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
Chief Deputy Walker will fill in until a new sheriff is appointed. That process will likely take up to 30 days.
