ESPN reporter Britt McHenry suspended after viral fat-shaming video
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – ESPN has suspended reporter Britt McHenry after she got caught on video berating a woman about her career, education and being overweight.
“I’m in the news, sweetheart,” says McHenry on the video. “I will (expletive) sue this place.”
The video was reportedly filmed sometime last week.
The woman she was insulting, a tow company employee, warns McHenry that she’s being videotaped, to which McHenry responds: “I wouldn’t work at a scumbag place like this … It makes my skin crawl even being here.”
The video ends with McHenry telling the attendant: “Maybe if I was missing some teeth they would hire me here. I’m on television and you’re in a (expletive) trailer, honey. Lose some weight, baby girl.”
The backlash led to a one-week suspension for the Northwestern University alumna. McHenry released a statement on Twitter telling followers that the incident was the result of a stressful moment.
“In an intense and stressful moment, I allowed my emotions to get the best of me and said some insulting and regrettable things. As frustrated as I was, I should always choose to be respectful and take the high road. I am so sorry for my actions and will learn from this mistake.”
