Event teaches IPS students about fire safety
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A major effort to teach kids about fire prevention and safety is underway. The Hartford hosted its Mobile Fire Safety House on Friday.
The company teamed up with Indianapolis Public Schools and the Indianapolis Fire Department for the event.
Dozens of kids at Clarence Farrington Elementary learned how to prevent fires in the kitchen and bedroom. They went through fire and smoke simulations to learn how to safety escape a fire.
“Being able to actually demonstrate what to do I think is why we’ve implemented the fire safety house. To be able to bring those lessons to real life and be able to say, OK what do you actually do versus what we’re hearing and telling them to do. This is more of an active role,” said Debora Raymond, Junior Fire Marshal Spokesperson for Hartford.
Friday’s event was for kids in kindergarten through 3rd grade. Teachers will now follow up in the classroom with lessons on fire safety.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 30 percent of house fires are started by children between the ages of six to nine.
