Family, friends remember IU student found dead

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Joseph Smedley’s memorial service was held Saturday afternoon at his alma mater, Lawrence Central High School. His friends and family gathered to remember the 20-year-old found dead in Griffy Lake back on Oct. 2, several days after he was reported missing.

The two-hour service included a video montage of the IU student.

Rows of candles were the source of light that surrounded pictures of Smedley. Stories and heartfelt poems were shared before the service ended in prayer.

“We will never know the contribution Joseph was going to make to society. He has a great mind and spirit,” said Smedley’s father, who is also named Joseph.

How Smedley died is still under investigation. His family said he was a strong swimmer.

These words were printed on the funeral program handed out to everyone who attended: “His memory is our keepsake, with which we will never part. God has him in his keeping, we will have him in our hearts.”
