Family of 8 escapes morning house fire

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A family of eight escaped a house fire early Wednesday morning.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, firefighters were sent to the 3600 block of North Mitchner Avenue around 5:32 a.m. after reports of a fire.

One of the children told firefighters and police their mother woke up downstairs to heavy smoke and then woke up the rest of their family. The child and mother told firefighters they believe the cause of the fire was to be electrical. They said they were having trouble with their breaker box earlier in the day.

Two of the eight had slight injuries and were checked on scene. They told medics they would drive themselves to the hospital.

IFD said there were no working smoke alarms.

The estimated damage is valued at $50,000.

Three adults ages 46, 31, and 26 were inside the home. Four kids ages 2, 10, 10, and 13 were also inside the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
