Final beam placed at new Lawrence PD headquarters

LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) – The final steel beam was lifted in place Tuesday at the new headquarters of the Lawrence Police Department on North Post Road.

The facility remains under construction, but officials say the beam marks an important milestone.

For the past week and a half, community members have been invited to sign the beam or write a message on it.

“We have a couple hundred signatures on it,” Lawrence Police Chief David Hofmann said. “Our department patch is up on that. We have some badge imagery. The other side of the beam that you can’t see, unfortunately, is a large memorial to Craig Herbert, who was the only officer to die in the line of duty in Lawrence’s history.”

The new 37,000 square-foot headquarters is set to open this fall or winter. Chief Hofmann said the department is excited about the new building because it will consolidate all police operations in one place.
