FSU suspends all fraternities and sororities after student’s death

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) – Florida State University has indefinitely suspended all Greek activities on campus following the death of a fraternity pledge.

FSU President John Thrasher announced the suspension on Monday, according to the university’s Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

“For this suspension to end, there will need to be a new normal for Greek Life at the university,” he said. “There must be a new culture, and our students must be full participants in creating it.”

The body of 20-year-old Andrew Coffey was found at 10 a.m. on Friday after he attended a party.

Coffey was reportedly a pledge for the Phi Kappa Pi Fraternity. The FSU chapter of the fraternity was suspended by its national organization after the death, pending the conclusion of the investigation.

During the suspension, President Thrasher also banned alcohol at all “Recognized Student Organization” events.

According to FSU, a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity was arrested Monday in an unrelated case for the sale and trafficking of cocaine.
